Chapter: Their belief concerning the attributes of The Lord of all that exists

It is the belief of the people of Tajahhum and I’tizaal (i.e. the Jahmiyyah and the Mu’tazillah), for they do not traverse the path of the prophets, messengers and leaders of guidence concerning them (i.e. the attributes). For they do not believe regarding Allah, blessed be He The most High, that which He described Himself with, nor that which the most knowledgable of the creation described him with- and he is the messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family,- rather they believe concerning Allah glorified and exalted be He that which the people of distortion believe, those that Allah freed himself from their actions, Allah The Most High said regarding His highness:1

Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they attribute unto Him. And peace be on the Messenger. And all the praise and thanks be to Allâh, Lord of the ‘Alamîn(mankind, jinns and all that exists
As-Saafaat 180-182

Then they do not affirm for Allah that which He affirms for Himself, or what the messenger of Allah affirmed for Him, may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him and his family, in a manner that is befitting for Him, glorified be He The Most High, without making resemblance of him (to the creation), and without Tajseem (representation of Allah in a human form) and without denying the meaning; rather they distort it with the perceptions of the people of I’tizaal (i.e. the Mu’tazillah).1

I will strike for you one example regarding the highness of Allah blessed be he The Most High, for they believe concerning Allah that He is everywhere, and that is the same belief of the heretical Jahmiyyah and Mu’tazillah.1

For they came to our land once with a teacher- to the land of Hajoor which is by the village of Banee Jabraan- then he started teaching the children this corrupt belief, so I debated him concerning this statement of the Jahmee’s. I presented to him the evidences from the Quraan and the Sunnah, and he refused that!!1

Then we said: “how can you believe regarding Allah that He is in everywhere, and that comprises of filthy places, impure places and rubbish, is not Allah free from that?!!”1

He did not cease being persistant upon that without any shame or disgrace, so we said to him: “what is it that you say when you are in your Sujood?” so he replied: “I say ‘glorified be my Lord The Most High'”1

So we said to him: “you yourself are in opposition to what you say, and this speach of yours is a refutation upon yourself”, thus did his condition become exposed to the people, we had answered his doubts, and the general folk left whilst laughing at him, and all praise is for Allah the people are upon the Fitrah, their Fitah did not become polluted and they did not accept these corrupt beliefs.1

And as a benefit I present to you my brother, the noble reader, some of the proofs of the highness of Allah The Most High.1

The Various types of proofs upon the highness of Allah The Most High:1

The evidences regarding affirmation of the highness of Allah blessed be He The Most High over his creation are of 18 types:

1st: Clearly certifying from the aspect of being above, linked with the linguistic particle “Min” which specifies the highness with essence, the statement of Allah The Most High:1

They fear their Lord above them
An-Nahl 50

2nd: Clearly certifying from the aspect of being above without using any linguistic particles, He said The Most High:1

And He is the Irresistible, above His slaves
Al-An’Aam 18

3rd: Clearly certifying with the aspect of rising to Him, He The Most High said:1

The angels and the Rûh [Jibrael] ascend to Him
Al-Ma’aarij 4

4th: Clearly certifying with the ascention of some things to Him, He The Most High said:1

To Him ascend (all) the goodly words
Faatir 10

5th: Clearly certifying with the raising of some of the creation to Him, He The Most High said:1

But Allâh raised him [‘Isa] up unto Himself
An-Nisaa 158

6th: Clearly certifying with unrestricted highness which indicates towards all of the levels of highness in essence, capability and eminence, The Most High said: 1

And He is the Most High, the Most Great
Al-Baqarah 255

And He The Most High said:1

He is the Most High, the Most Great
Saba’ 23

7th: Clearly certifying from the aspect of sending down the book, The Most High said:1

The revelation of this Book (the Qur’ân) is from Allâh, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise
Az-Zumar 1

8th: Clearly certifying with specifying that some of the creation are with him, and that some of them are closer to him than others, He The Most high said:1

Surely, those who are with your Lord (i.e. the angels) are never too proud to perform acts of worship to Him, but they glorify His Praise and prostrate before Him
Al-A’raaf 206

And in Saheeh Al-Bukhari (3194) and Muslim (2751) that Abu Hurairah said: the messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family said: “When Allah created the creation He wrote in his book that is with Him above the throne ‘Verily My mercy has overcome My anger'”1

:Clearly certifying that He, glorified be He, is in the heavens, The Most High said:1

Or do you feel secure that He, Who is “Fee” the heaven (Allâh), will not send against you a violent whirlwind? Then you shall know how (terrible) has been My Warning?1
Al-Mulk 16

The meaning of “Fee” is “‘Alaa” (above) for the word “Fee” has the meaning “‘Alaa” as Allah The Most High said:1

He it is, Who has made the earth subservient to you, so walk
“Fee Manaakibihaa1
Al-Mulk 15

I.e. Upon the the path thereof, and the things that bare witness to this are many.1

10th: Clearly certifying with the aspect of rising, linked with the linguistic particle “‘Alaa”, The Most High says:1

The Most Beneficent (Allâh) Istawâ (rose over) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). 1
Taahaa 5

11th: Clearly certifying with the raising the two hands towards Him during Du’a, as in the Hadeeth of Anas that he said: “I saw the messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, raise his hands during Du’a, until the whiteness of his armpits became visible” reported by Muslim number 895.1

12th: Clearly certifying the descending of Allah blessed be He The Most High every night to the lowest heaven, as is in the Saheehayn from the Hadeeth of Abu Hurairah may Allah be pleased with him, and descending is from something higher to something lower.1

13th: Pointing towards Him which is an awareness of highness, as the prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, pointed in his farewell sermon with his finger to the sky, the Hadeeth is related by a group of the Sahaabah and is in the Saheehayn and other than them.1

14th: Clearly certifying with his declaration, peace and blessings be upon him, to the slave girl when she said: Allah is in the sky- that she is a believer, for in Saheeh Muslim (537) on the authority of Muawwiyah Bin Al-Hakm As-Sulamee who said: I had a slave girl who looked after sheep for me close to Uhud and Juwwaaniyyah, one day I came to know that a wolf had taken away a sheep from her flock, and I am a man from the children of Aadam, I get upset just as they (the children of Aadam) get upset, however I gave her a beating. Then I came to the messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, and that (event) was tremendous upon me, I said: ‘Oh messenger of Allah, should I not free her?’ he said “bring her to me” so I brought her to him and he said to her “Where is Allah” she replied: “in the sky” so then he asked “Who am I?” to which she said “you are the messenger of Allah”, so he said “free her for she is a believer”.a

Al-Imaam Abdul-Ghanee Al-Maqdasee said in Al-Iqtisaad fil I’tiqaad, may Allah have mercy upon him:
q“And who is more ignorant, more feeble in intellect and more astray from the path than he who says: “it is not permissible that “Where is Allah” is to be asked? after the clear certification that the possessor of the Islamic legislation (i.e. The messenger) had said “Where is Allah”.1

15th: Clearly certifying with the clarification that Allah is in the sky, like that which has come before.1

16th: His informing, The Most High, about Firauwn that he desired to ascend to the heavens, in order to look at the God of Musaa and that he thought Musaa was a liar concerning this claim, The Most high said regarding him:1

that I may arrive at the ways. The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the Ilâh (God) of Mûsa (Moses) but verily, I think him to be a liar
Ghaafir 36-37

17th: The prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, informing of the going back and forth between Musaa and his Lord on the night he was raised up to him (i.e. the Hadeeth concerning the 50 prayers). The Hadeeth is in the Sahaahayn on the authority of Anas Bin Sa’Sa’ah, Abee Dharr and other than them.1

18th: The evidence of when the people of paradise see their Lord, that they see Him from above.1

From the path of Isma’eel Bin Abee Khaalid, from Qays Bin Abee Haazim, from Jareer Bin Abdullah who said: “we were sitting with the messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him and his family, when he looked at the moon on the night it was full then he said: “you will see your Lord just as you see this moon, you will have no trouble seeing Him. So if you can avoid missing the prayer before the setting of the sun and before it rises then you should do so, meaning ‘Asr and Fajr.” then Jareer recited:

وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ غُرُوبِهَا
and glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting
Taahaa 130

Reported by Al-Bukhari (554) and Muslim (633).1

And whoever rejects this Hadeeth then he is a Jahmee, Wakee’ said: “Whoever speaks bad about the Hadeeth of Ismaa’eel Bin Abee Khaalid, from Qays Bin Abee Haazim, from Jareer then he is a Jahmee”.1
Reported by Abdullah Bin Ahmed in As-Sunnah (418)and Al-Bukhari connected it in his book Khalq Af’aal Al-Ibaad (25) and it (i.e. the narration) is sound (Hassan).1

The affair of the vision (of the people of paradise) has consensus upon it, see volume five of Al-‘Awaasim wal-Qawaasim.1
