Shaykul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked
did the ahlus Suffah (the poor who were living in the Masjid of the
Prophet, alaihi as-salaatu was-salaam), may Allah be pleased with
them, use to make their earnings through their hands or through
begging using a zanbeel (similar to a box)…?
“… No one from the Sahaabah, not ahlus Suffah or other than them would
take an occupation of asking the people (their money) neither by
severely begging nor through a zanbeel (similar to a box) nor through
other than it whereas they would not seek provision except through
Majmoo’ul Fataawaa (11/45-46)
